The Aare of Efon kingdom and the Secretary of Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Dr. Kunle Olajide has declared that Yoruba elders are the ones preventing break up of Nigeria when several attempts were made to break it.
Dr Olajide stated this in his paper at the Yoruba Summit held in Ibadan, the Oyo State with the theme “Yoruba Standpoint on Restructuring held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba.
The YCE Secretary General disclosed that it was the Yoruba leaders that used their wisdom to ensure that several attempts made to tear Nigeria apart did not see the light of the day.
According to Dr Olajide, several attempts have been made to tear the country apart but leaders of the Yoruba race at all times have always risen to the occasion to stem such tendencies, saying, the founding fathers of Nigeria from Yoruba land have done their best in saving the country from collapsing.
The YCE Secretary General said the Yoruba summit was part of the efforts by the Yoruba living legends to rescue Nigeria as a country from its present challenges.
” We are here gathered to do an honest review of our past, frank appraisal of the present and a telescopic view of our future. Yoruba from pre-independence era have labored along with other Nigerian patriot to build this potentially great country. Has Nigeria’s potential been realized? No.” he said.
Dr Olajide added, “centrifugal tendencies have often threatened to tear this country apart but the Yoruba people, our founding fathers and patriots at all times have always risen to the occasion to stem such tendencies.”
“This ship of the Nigerian state is floundering. It is in fact heading towards a titanic rock and Nigerians from all parts of the country must rise up to halt the drift. All Nigerians must speak up, silence cannot be golden at these times and silence in this time is crime against humanity.”
The YCE scribe maintained that “in a heterogeneous country like Nigeria, nation building is an unending process of negotiation. Our elders in Yorubaland motivated by a burning desire to save the sinking ship of Nigeria state put the planning committee of this summit together to arrange this historic event.
“I want to thank our elders for their patriotism and commitment to building a just and equitable Nigerian state. This is a coalition of Yoruba interest groups who are committed to championing the birth of a new Nigeria. Presently by the fake constitution we are operating Nigeria has been put in a consumption mode, sharing and sharing and not backing the cake. We are determined to move Nigeria from this consumption mode to a productive mode.”
Dr Olajide stressed that the time to see every able bodied Nigerian willing to work gainfully employed”,saying, “that is the Nigeria of my dream. This position is to stimulate national debate with a view of reaching consensus on the new Nigeria.
“Change is often the most difficult scenario to chive because human beings generally resist change even if it is good for them. We are here gathered to begin the process that will put a halt to this drifting. The plenary leaders and members of the planning committee are under no illusion that this struggle for change will be easily achieved we realize it may be a long haul but we are prepared for it.”
