In order to comply with global standards in waste disposal, Clean Lagos Initiative (CLI) will take off soon, the state government has announced amidst outcry by residents that mountains of refuse dumps on streets and roadsides are threatening their health.
The programme is said to be a holistic and comprehensive waste management policy of the Lagos State government to implement the collection of refuse in accordance with international best practices.
The government declared that when CLI becomes operational refuse bins will be provided to discourage indiscriminate dumping of wastes.
The government therefore urged people living in the state to adopt a new attitude towards refuse disposal and to desist from discharging waste into drainages and canals.
To ensure the success of the initiative the state government charged the authorities of the state’s 20 local government council areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) to implement thorough environmental cleaning strategies in their respective localities.
The charge will be given by government officials who will be moving round to evaluate disposed wastes.
