As part of event to commemorate the International Women’s Day, Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF), in ‎partnership with Global Initiative for Women (GIWAC), recently in Kaduna, organised a training workshop for journalists on ‘violence against women and children’.
The workshop was aimed at helping journalists understand issues around violence against women and children and plan stories that will stimulate action from policy makers, law enforcement agencies, family of survivors and perpetrators of VAWC, community and religious leaders, health providers and the general public.
Speaking at the workshop, Commissioner of Women Affairs and Rural Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, called on men not to shy ‎away from discussing issues of women as they are both partners in progress to move the state and Nation forward.
“We all need to accept change because it is the most constant thing in our lives. Women are becoming more aware of their rights unlike in the past, although, they are yet get to where they desire to be.
“My ministry is committed to making positive impact at the grass root. Over the years, the ‎people at urban centres have been benefiting from government policies and programmes with little or no impact on those at the grass root level.
“The areas to emphasis on at the grass root are education, health, environment/hygiene and agriculture where a large number of our women have strength.” she explained.
‎Hajiya Hafsat, noted that the IWD, is not just to appraise and celebrate the totality of women’s achievement but to also reflect on her challenges politically, socially, economically and in all spheres of life, adding that her ministry is planning to organise a women’s day celebrations in the rural communities.
‎Presenting  a paper on “perspective of reporting violence against women and children”, the coordinator AMDF Sekyen Dadik, noted that it is possible to end violence against women and children and the media have a big role to play in the fight.

She added that the involvement of law enforcement agencies in the fight is also a big factor.

“Women should not live in fear of violence, and every child should grow up knowing he/she is safe, and have the best start in life.” Dadik said.
