Unemployment: NAOWA Institute Of Secretarial Management To The Rescue

The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA ), known as the Institute of Secretarial and Management Studies located at 1 Div Kaduna, is  a non-profit, non-governmental organization with the objectives of assisting the poor and the needy and raising the standard of living in barracks.
Since its establishment,  NAOWA has been in the vanguard of the provision of community health centres to complement the health care delivery services and carefully designed welfare programmes that are targeted at women, youths, children and the less privileged in Nigeria.
The organisation has been described as “the most powerful women’s  organisation in the country”.
NAOWA in Kaduna is currently affiliated to Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic in Zaria with awards of National Diploma at the end of its programmes. Various courses offered in the institution are  maximum of five credit including English and Mathematics with three subjects related to the program wish to offer.
Speaking with the Deputy Director, Mr Adeniyi Murtala,  in his office, he  said some of the skills acquisition in the institution are Office Technology and Management formerly known as Secretarial Studies, Computer Science, among others.
He said the Diploma within is a two-year program, which admits students with school  leaving certificate, students from Junior Secondary School (JSS), instead of being idle at home, 70% is pure practical while 30% is theory.
“We trained them to be self employed. We have fashion and textile technology, students are trained to sew different clothes including military wears,” he explained.
Ajayi said that the bulk of their students are soldiers, but the training is open for both military and civilians.
He said, the training is to assist the students to get  employment, especially those in catering department, most of whom get jobs before the end of their programs.
One of the students in the institution (name withheld) said he has benefited a lot, and is confident to establish a computer training institute to impact knowledge  to the younger ones.
Mr Joseph Oladipupo Ajayi, who is the Director of NAOWA Institute of Secretarial and Management Studies, said variety of programmes like soap making, is being organized as skills acquisition to stop children roaming about in the barracks.
