Sokoto state branch of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners(NUP), yesterday pleaded with Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko to consider 15 percent increment of pensioners’ salaries in the state.
Chairman of the union, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Tangaza, made the plea , at the 2012 Pensioners Day, held in Sokoto.
According to him, the governor was aware of the needs and condition of pensioners in the state, hence he should come to their aid.
He stressed the need for the state government to provide free treatment to all pensioners and their families in the state local government hospitals, as it is being enjoyed by their counterparts in some parts of the country.
The NUP chairman noted that the state pensioners have been receiving prompt salaries without any hitches since the inception of Wamakko’s administration.
He lauded the state government for payment of the gratuities of 740 retirees of Giginya and Shukura hotel as well as contract staff amounting to N444 million last week.
“We  really commend the governor for settling the accumulated gratuities of the state and local government pensioners as well as staff of Giginya hotel,”
“In fact, Wamakko has fulfilled his pledge of prompt payment to pensioners, in spite of the limited resources and economic crises,”Tangaza stated.
He called on civil servants in the state to continue to support the present administration in order to move the state forward, saying Sokoto is greater than any individual.
Tangaza therefore, urged the state government to see to the possibility if increasing their salaries in view of the escalating cost of food items in the state.
“The cost of living has increased tremendously, so we are pleading with Wamakko to increase the pension in order to reduce our suffering,”Tangaza added.
