Kaduna Rugby Club has appealed to the state ‎governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai to reconsider his stand of collecting their field, land and other properties, saying rugby is a money spinning business the state government should give attention to.
Assistant Captain of the club, Samaila Agom made the appeal on behalf of the team and management of the club on while briefing newsmen in Kaduna.
Governor el-Rufai, through the Kaduna Geographic Information Service (KADGIS), had on 8th March, 2017, signed by Jerry Samba, Ag. Director, Valuation of the agency,  sent a letter informing the club of his intention to revoke their property.
According to the letter, titled “Re: valuation of neighbourhood centre at WAFF road Kaduna”, the agency said “I am directed to invite you in relation to the above subject and to inform you that the sum of N26, 000, 000. 00 (twenty six million naira) only has been approved for payment of compensation in respect of your property earlier accessed.”
‎But the development seems not to be okay with the management of the club, as they want the governor to review the plan because of the importance of the game to youth development in the state.
‎According to Samaila, the Kaduna Rugby Club has become an institution where players are being trained and mentored for self development thereby changing their economic situation.
“This club has brought us a lots of discipline and respect, giving us opportunities to travel around the world and winning both national and continental trophies for the state and the nation.
“It is a school where children learn ‎the game and we are currently working on a programme that will enable secondary school children have the opportunity to start learning the game while in school.
“‎We know that the governor has given us a good offer to collect the property, but we are not after the money. What we are saying is the future of the club.
“This club has a history, it has given opportunity to young people to develop themselves, taking them out of the street from nobody to becoming people in life.
“The property has been here since 1953, and the position is one of best place it should be in the city. The government have access to lands across the state so they can do whatever they want do in this place elsewhere in the state.
“So we are appealing to the governor to please assist us to develop and improve the state of the club rather than collecting the place from us because rugby is a money spinning business that can turn the economic of the state around.”‎
