THE House of Representatives has summoned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and Commissioners of Police in Kano and Rivers State, and the Federal Capital Territory over alleged harassment of people.
This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Aliyu Madaki, as the resolved to set up an Ad Hoc committee to carry out the investigation, and report back its findings in Three weeks.
Madaki who lamented the alleged “harassment and intimidation of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Kano State, loyal to the Kwankwasiya Movement” in Kano stated that the investigation was needed in order to avert a breakdown of law and order.
Madaki said the problem started when APC members of the national and the state parliaments from Kano State went to Katsina State for the North-West zonal meeting of the party on January 29, noting that some of them were however barred from attending the meeting by personnel of the Nigerian police.
Praying for the House’s urgent investigation into the mater, Madaki said it was worrisome “that the Police Commissioner descended into the arena over issues that are purely political, such that many in Kano now regard him as the de facto factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC)” in the state.
His prayer was however amended to expand the investigation to also cover reports of similar harassments in Rivers State, and the FCT, soon after a motion to that effect was moved by Hon. Tajudeen Yusuf.
