Federal Commissioner, National Commission For Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Sadiya Umar in conjunction with Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) is to bring an end the influx of migration in north west Geo-political zone.
Speaking in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday when she declared open a two days workshop for the north west zone as part of measures to decentralize the national migration the Federal Commissioner said that the aim of the workshop is to mobilize the states and local government ares as well as Community Based Organizations CSOs through a decentralized process and consolidate the channels of communication with the migration focal points for each of the 36 states of the federation.
According to her, this is the most effective and efficient way to bring migration discourse down and closer to the grassroots whom she consider as the real people who feel the impact of both the positives and negatives of migration management and mismanagement
She noted that the workshop is also to integrate the states and local government structures as well as Community Based Organizations.CSOs into the migration governance structures through the establishment of a migration desk in all the states who, will serve as liaison with the NCFRMI zonal officers in each of the Geo political zones which at the end will establish a communication channels linkage between the commission at headquarters, zonal office and the state liaison.
Umar pointed out that before there was wide gap that existed in the operation of the Federal Agencies and the state governments in terms of migration governance in the country hence took the opportunity to interrogate the efforts of the various agencies of the federal government in managing migration in Nigeria particularly in north west zone.
She however urged the participants at the workshop to use what they learn towards a fruitful deliberations.
The Federal Commissioner also visited IDPs camp in Bunza local government where she made a personnel donation of assorted bags of rice and promised to construct a befitting camps with relief materials by the commission.
