More than 1,000 teachers in Oyo State, who were reinstated by the government in September, have expressed concern over the non-payment of their salary arrears.
The teachers, who spoke on the coudition ofanonymity, said they could not understand the reason for the delay in the payment of their arrears since July when they were suspended.
The teachers, who were sacked in June for alleged falsification of their age certificates, were reinstated in September after the review of their cases.
Some of the teachers told newsmen in Ibadan that they were informed that Gov. Abiola Ajimobi had approved the payment of their five months salary arrears since last week.
They alleged that some government officials involved in the payment of the arrears may be responsible for the delay in effecting payment.
They said that the non-payment of their salaries for five months had affected their families, adding that they could no longer meet the financial needs of their wives and children.
The teachers appealed to the governor to prevail on officials in charge of the payment to release the money without further delay.
The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Tokunbo Fayokun, confirmed that the governor had approved the payment of the salary arrears owed the teachers.
She referred the teachers to the state Teaching Service Commission to find out why their salaries had not been paid.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation Mr Taiwo Otegbeye, also said in a telephone interview that the State Executive Council had approved the payment of the arrears.
