Women across Kaduna State and Nigeria have access to child spacing methods with the Nigeria Urban Reproduction Health Initiative (,NURHI) Intervention.
This can be more effective in Kaduna State if the Drugs Supply and Management Authority (DSMA) speeds the purchase of the child spacing consumables in order to meet up with the high demand in various hospitals and primary healthcare centers in the state following the recent release of 100,000 million allocated for the child spacing by the Kaduna State Government.
A visit on a media tour by Kaduna by journalists to some of the hospitals and primary healthcare centers in the southern part of the state revealed that there is high turn out of women to family planning units since the intervention of NURHI and that the demand for the consumables have outgrown the supply of the NURHI as the state government is yet to start contributing it’s own share.
The record by the Family Planning Monitoring chart for update of service showed that there is over 200 increase of women attendance who at times come along with their husbands demanding for the services, since the family pllanning units of the Patrick Yakowa General Hospital and some primary health care centers in Jama’a Local Government Council were renovated and well equiped with facilities and the consumables.
One of the family planning service providers, Mrs Patience Nuhu Akapson said that before NURHI’s intervention, there was low patronage of family planning services but recorded high response since the project was commissioned in November 2016, resulting to shortage in supply of the consumables and stressed the need for a quick action by the government to meet up with the demands.
According to her, most of the consumables supplied by NURHI which is normally given o the family planning unit monthly, gets exhausted within two weeks and they are left with no option than charge their clients small amounts of money to enable them purchase the consumables, hence the need for the relevant agency to try and start it’s supply.
She however appreciated NURHI for providing every thing needed for the family planning in southern and northern parts of the state and further encouraged couples to embrace and ensure the maximum use of the facilities provided at the primary healthcare centres.
Also speaking, the Medical Director, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa General Hospital, Dr. Gyawiya Gajere Jonathan, said NURHI has provided a befitting family planning unit in a strategic site in his hospital where there is privacy for women to comfortably access the commodities. .
The medical director who lauded the efforts of NURHI for renovating and equipping family planning unit within a few days, said the gesture is first of its kind.
“We are happy with the 72-hour clinic makeover. It has impacted positively on our healthcare service delivery and this will consolidate government’s efforts in reducing maternal and child mortality in the state. We are glad and we hope that the needed funds will be made available so that this cost-effective and speedy way of rehabilitating facilities will be replicated by the state government,” he stressed.
According to him, there has been increase in patronage as people are showing more interest in receiving family planning.
Earlier, the family planning provider, Ginatu Kure, assured that the center has enough facilities to accommodate any complaints from any woman pertaining child spacing.
She explained that even before the coming of NURHI to the hospital, couples have embraced child spacing, pointing out that since November last year when NURHI provided all the necessary facilities to the hospital, there has been a massive number of women that come to the hospital on a daily basis for all types of inplants.
