DIRECTOR-GENERAL of National Teachers Institute (NTI) Dr Ladan Sharehu yesterday lamented the high rate of failure in mathematics and science subjects despite the trainings and re-trainings of teachers in the country.
Speaking on the 6th Cohort Training Programme for 75 teachers drawn from five states Anambra, Delta, Rivers, Nasarawa and Sokoto states, Sharehu said mathematics and science teachers need to improvise and innovate in creating a classroom that would ginger and motivate the children to learn what they are being taught to ensure improvement in the performances in the subjects.
“Science and Mathematics are areas where Federal Government is giving emphasis to but with all the trainings and re-trainings we are still having student failures what is the problem, is the fault from the teachers, the trainers, the students? Something positive should be seen from training and re-trainings such as this,” he said.
According to the DG who was represented by the Dean, School of Education, Prof. Abubakar Suleiman asked the participants to discuss the problems and come up with a workable solution.
The Director-General also called on the participants to contribute and find time to recreate and interact with their colleagues from other states on how to move education forward.
Earlier National Coordinator for the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) Centre, Dr Ahmed Bello said the current Cohort training came after 375 teachers of mathematics and science subjects have underwent five similar programmes for other states.
He urged teachers to be professional and give their best to resolve the apathy to learning mathematics and science subjects in Nigeria, adding that the subjects are bedrock to technological development of any country.
According to the dean, no child is poor, every child has a potential to be successful stressing that it is the environment that would prove otherwise.
“We are here to show how to create classroom environment for the pupils to learn mathematics and science,” he said.
