The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman has said that modern equipment has been acquired for efficient and effective Cargo Handling.

She said that channels are more navigable following the removal of wrecks and regular dredging exercise making them more convenient for vessels as large as 260 meters long and between 8.5 to 13.7 meters deep to call at the ports.

She made the statement at the NPA Special Day at the ongoing 38th Kaduna International Trade Fair where she was represented by her Technical Assistant on Admin, Mr Musa Shehu Yaro.

According to her, “ports are n‎ow connected to the rail lines which which enable containers to be moved from Lagos ports to Kano, thus reducing congestion and accidents on our roads.

“The Terminal Operators have the ability to handle reefer containers, which are refrigerated containers for fish and other agricultural products that require storage under specific conditions.

She added that in 2006, the Federal Government of Nigeria initiated the drive towards improving efficiency in the Ports and the Land Lord Model was adopted for all the ports, as is the current practice worldwide.

She went further to say that a total of 25 terminals were concessioned to private Terminal Operators with lease agreement.  ‎
