Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) has asked the state government to as a matter of urgency be transparent  and show of human face in its on going data capturing and biometrics of workers in the state.

Chairman of the union, Comrade Waheed Olojede said this at the end of a marathon meeting of Chairmen and Secretaries of all affiliate unions under NLC.

Comrade Olojede pointed out that in as much as the NLC “is not averse to updating the data of the state workforce, the government must do it in a way that it would not affect the lives of workers negatively”

“Oyo NLC SEC has been in a marathon meeting on the issues of incessant dismissal of workers, data capturing , biometrics, salary arrears and such other issues as it relates to the work environment of workers in the state.
We considered very critically the need for the state government to as a matter of urgency beat a retreat on the ongoing data capturing and biometrics of workers in the state”he said.

The NLC Chairman noted that when the biometrics screening initially started, some workers who were accused of fake document but later cleared are still being made to suffer unnecessarily by not being paid their entitlements in terms of salaries

“Labour is not averse to updating the data of the state workforce but government must do it in a way that it would not affect the lives of workers negatively when it is claiming it is in their interest. When the screening initially started, some workers who were accused of fake document but later cleared are still being made to suffer unnecessarily by not being paid their entitlements in terms of salaries”

Accusing Oyo state government of deliberate attempt not to carry the union along in the data capturing and biometrics matter by allegedly ignoring formal requests for a meeting to be called between the labour and the government, he said two formal requests sent to the government on the subject was neither acknowledged nor replied.

Comrade Olojede while lauding Oyo state government for allowing the accused workers an opportunity to defend themselves, especially on the allegations of fake results and other allegations, the NLC Chairman lamented that about a year after they have been cleared by the committee set up by the government, many of those alleged have yet to be receiving salary

“We thank government for allowing such accused workers an opportunity to defend themselves, especially on the allegations of fake results and other allegations, but it is disheartening to note that about a year after they have been cleared by the committee set up by the government, many of those alleged have yet to be receiving salary thereby putting them in a pitiable conditions, to the extent that they even struggle to go to work”.

The NLC Chairman added that labour unions in Oyo state will not cover up or shield any worker who is guilty of any offence but that the government should as a matter of transparency and show of human face “as well as let those who have been duly cleared be integrated back to the scheme of works and paid their outstanding salaries”.

“For us as labour leaders, we will not cover up or shield any worker who is guilty of any offence but government must as a matter of transparency and show of human face let those who have been duly cleared be integrated back to the scheme of works and paid their outstanding salaries”
