Team Kwara lived up to their name as the home of squash as they won the boys and girls Singles event gold and silver, at the on-going third National Youth Games at the University of Ilorin.
In both the girls and boys singles event, it was Kwara against selves, and the state is also dictating the pace in the team event which will be concluded on Saturday.
Rofiat Abdulazeez defeated fellow Kwaran, Odunade Adeyi 3-1 sets in the girls singles final, while Durosinlorun Uthman beat Abdulrahman Nasiru to also in the Boys Singles event.
Rofiat Abdulazeez had earlier beaten Kayode Florence of Ondo state in the semi-final. Odunade was stretched to the limit by Ibidun Mejidade from Ogun state in the second semi-final, making extra effort to pull through.
In the boys semi-finals, Uthman and Nasir defeated Mustapha Habeeb and Idowu Ololade, both of Ogun state respectively, to reach the final.
Coach of Kwara team, Isiaka Magaji, while expressing delight at the feat, dedicated the achievement to the Kwara State Squash Association, sponsors and supporters of various youth development tournaments in the state.
He commended the state government for providing the enabling environment, while also commending the Ministry of Sports, the Sports Council and the stakeholders for their support.
He also commended other squash coaches in the state for their hard work and dedication.
