The maiden edition of the Kwara State All Primary Schools Athletics Competition which ended in Ilorin last week, gulped over N4.8million.
Sponsor of the competition, Tunde Abdulkareem disclosed this while fielding questions from newsmen at his residence in Ilorin.
According to him, the money was spent on logistics and prize money handed out to winners of each category.
Abdulkareem who is the Chairman of the Kwara State Athletics Association explained that prior to that, the Kwara Secondary Schools Athletics Competition gulped N5.3m annually for three editions held in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
He said that talents discovered are monitored by the association and their welfare taken care of.
“We rent apartments for them close to the stadium and also take care of their welfare,” he said.
Speaking further, he said that in view of Kwara’s advantage in sprints, the state has produced national talents that have made the country proud in the past, a feat they want to consolidate on.
