Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA), has been directed to sanction the Contractor engaged by the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) to evacuate and dispose of waste for breaching the KEPA law No. 7 of 2012 section 27 (2) which stipulates that waste shall be properly disposed of at places designated by the Authority for such purposes.
The resolution to sanction the contractor with the address name: Messrs Chime Investment Nigeria Limited, located in Chikun Local Government was reached by the Kaduna State House of Assembly yesterday following a report presented by its House committee saddled with the responsibility of investigating a purported toxic waste dumping at Rido Village in Chikun Local Government Area of the state.
Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Solid Minerals, Labari Shelly Tella. said the contractor should be sanctioned because where it dumped the waste was not the approved site by KEPA.
“We have an approved site by KEPA at Kakau along Kaduna – Abuja Highway. The contractor breached the terms of agreement of the contract with KRPC which provided specific dump site as approved by KEPA and dumping was done haphazardly without the consent of KRPC,” he stated.
The committee while also revealing its findings to the plenary refuted that there was no loss of lives and farm produce as earlier claimed, saying “Biams Integrated farms not far away from the dump site reportedly suffered the loss of about eight hundred (800) birds but did not present any evidence to support its claims. Also the death of Liberty Monday Madaki, was not supported by any medical evidence.
“That, the sarkin Rido did not have knowledge of any death recorded as reported by some Members of his community including the press (Media),” Mr. Tella added.
The committee, howeve,r tasked the Kaduna State Environment Protection Authority on strict compliance with environmental laws, just as it enjoined the Refining Company to always carry out supervision and monitoring on contractors to comply with laws and regulation of the Environmental Authority.
It would be recalled that the House, July, 2012, passed a resolution mandating the committee with carry out an investigation into the purported toxic waste dumping at Rido Village in Chikun Local Government Area by the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC).
