The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole has reiterated that Nigerians are safe with the consumption of Fanta and Sprite produced by Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC).

Professor Adewole who said this in Ibadan at the weekend while speaking at a Luncheon held in his honour by Justice Olayinka Ayoola JSC (Rtd), declared that the present administration in the country “is people centred, and our objective is purposely driven by the consciousness of the general well being of Nigerians”,
“This government is people centred, and our objective is purposely driven by the consciousness of the general well being of Nigerians, we are committed towards healthy living for all irrespective of tribe, religion or status: reducing mortality rate of all curable disease to the lowest percentage ever” he said.
Speaking further, the Minister pointed out that “in the last two years of this administration we have strived to improve and promote our health infrastructures by all standards”
According to him,the ministry of health “has carried out a thorough analysis and investigation through random sampling of Fanta and Sprite bottles in circulation within Nigeria and subjected it to laboratory test, the outcome of the benzoic acid content is in conformity with the international standards regulation as instructed by CODEX, which is 250mg/kg”.
“The tropical region where we find ourselves based on our climatic condition and temperature allows for the variation of the benzoic acid compared to the Fanta/Sprite found in UK. Similarly, when you check across different countries in the world with similar or slightly above temperature with Nigeria, the CODEX regulated level of their benzoic acid in carbonated drinks is as high as 400mg/kg to 600mg/ kg before now”
“My medical practice in about four decades as a physician is primarily to save lives and I will not in any way undermine this clarion. The distrust in the regulatory and monitoring agencies of government in the minds of Nigerians over the years should not be used as a yardstick to assess the current situation, we are more than committed to ensure the safety of all Nigerians, protecting them always irrespective of the business interest, nationally or internationally”.
