There are several safe methods of family planning that can be adopted by women without fears of any life threatening side effects accompanying them, an expert and consultant for the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiatives (NURHI), Hajiya Jamila Garba Mohammed has clarified.
She cleared the air on this while delivering a lecture at a Two-day Training For Bloggers On Effective Family Planning Projection, which ended in Kaduna on Thursday, stressing that family planning is free in all public hospitals in Kaduna State.
According to her, family planning is classified into three categories namely; traditional, natural and modern methods, with trained health workers ensuring that women are tested to know which method soothes them the most before they are placed on such.
“The traditional methods of family planning include abstinence, prolonged lactation, withdrawal method, charms/amulets and herbs.
“Natural methods are the use of standard day method, calendar, basal body temperature and lactational amenorrhea method (LAM),” she explained.
According to her, the most reliable category prescribed for most women is the modern method of family planning, which are further grouped into three sub categories namely; hormonal, barrier and voluntary surgical contraception which is the only irreversible intervention for family planning.
“The hormonal method is very safe as it works by secreting hormones that make it unfavourable for the sperm to fertilize the eggs. Types of hormonal method are the use of injectables, combined and low dose oral pills, implants-jadelle and implanon, vaginal rings and patches,” she explained.
Hajiya Mohammed listed male and female condoms and diaphragm  as those  grouped under the barrier method of family planning, while explaining that the voluntary surgical contraception has two key types; the bilateral tubal ligation for females and the vasectomy for males.
The health specialist said that the aim of family planning was not to prevent women from having babies, but ensuring that the health of women was not compromised while birthing babies.
She expressed happiness over the growing consciousness among the women folk in Kaduna State on the importance of child spacing,  which she said is now being accepted as healthy timing spacing of pregnancy.
A similar workshop has been held in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, while one is also billed for Lagos  and is organised by Development Communications Network (DevComs) in partnership with NURHI and funded by international partners.
Other professionals who lectured at the training include Kaduna State Team Leader NURHI, Kabir M. Abdullahi, Programme Oficer DevCom, Omobonike Adebayo, Media Specialist, Mr. lliya Kure and Lead Consultant, Kuturanki Systems, Mr. Silas Auta.
The residential workshop featured no fewer than 20 Kaduna based bloggers and media practitioners. They arrived Tuesday and departed on Friday.
