FORMER Federal Permanent Secretary, Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed said there may be no end to poverty in the northern region.
Hakeem Baba Ahmed who was speaking at the 1st Annual Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation Lecture on “Leadership and Good Governance in Nigeria” blamed various governments in the North for the high rate of poverty in the region.
According to him, 28 per cent of the entire budgets of the 19 state governments in the North are being spent in different Government Houses on various reasons including security.
This situation, he said, would not give room for true development to thrive in the region while northerners remained poor.
Baba Ahmed who described late Sir Ahmadu Belo as a true leader remarked that, all the legacies left behind by the late premier of the North have been left to die a natural death.
Speaking in the same vein, Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole decried the state of Sardauna’s legacies which, he said, are currently in “a sorry state.”
Oshiomhole therefore charged northern leaders to ensure that permanent peace returned to the North while Sardauna’s legacies should be revived.
The event was attended by prominent northern leaders including chairman, Northern Governors Forum, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Adamu Ciroma, among others.
