ECONOMIC and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives intercepted the son of Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State at the Malam Aminu Kano Airport Tuesday night trying to allegedly smuggle out about seven million Naira in hard currency and is now in detention.
The accused, Aminu Sule Lamido who is the eldest son of Governor Sule Lamido according to the spokesperson of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren who confirmed the arrest told newsmen that Aminu was on his way to Egypt when he was intercepted by operatives of EFCC.
He said Aminu who earlier declared that he was carrying 10,000 dollars was later found to have been in possession of 40,000 dollars instead which is above the maximum amount approved by law.
Sources said the suspect was to be prosecuted at the Federal High Court Kano yesterday by 1pm but when journalists went to the court to witness the trial they were told by court officials that no case of that nature was presented as at that time.
Meanwhile, officials of Jigawa State Government could not be reached to comment on the matter as they were said to be holding their weekly executive council meeting.
Meanwhile, sequel to the arrest of Alhaji Aminu Sule Lamido, the son of Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State by the EFCC, at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport enroute Egypt, some indigenes of the state have reacted saying it is good that the investigation be extended across the state on other public office holders too.
Speaking to newsmen in a telephone chat a former House of Representatives member from Garki/Babura constituency, Alhaji Nasuru Garba Dantiye said he is not in any way surprised by the arrest of the governor’s son.
The former MP said it was not the first time Governor Sule Lamido’s son got entangled with the EFCC though the first was swept under the carpet.
In his words “Lamido’s second son was arrested in 2010 when the Governor kicked against the move for President Goodluck Jonathan to contest and later changed gear at last” “And now that Lamido is known to be advocating to contest the Presidential seat so it may also be another strategy,” he declared.
Dantiye said it is common knowledge to the people of the state that the governor’s children are involved in many contracts executed in the state since 2007, a development that made them to become instant billionaires.
Another indigene of the state who spoke on condition of anonymity said this is an indication that what the opposition has been feeding the state in terms of high level of corruption in the state is true.
