Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU ) on Monday asked the National Assembly to intervene and prevent another major crisis in the Nigeria education sector.
ASUU made the call in a release signed by the Zonal Chairman, Ibadan Zone of the union comprising University of Ibadan, LAUTECH, Unilorin, KWASU and UNIOSUN Dr Ade Adejumo and made available to journalists in Ibadan.
The union in the release warned that the nation’s education sector may soon be plunged into another round of crisis due to the “unfortunate trend of decreasing salary to public universities”.
According to ASUU, the ugly trend which started since December, 2015 has resulted in payment of truncated salaries to ASUU members who have rendered hundred percent of duties in their universities.
Dr Adejumo who stated that University of Ibadan workers in the last two months has received drastically reduced salaries as a result of this inexplicable trend of incomplete subvention from the Federal Government, threatened that the academic staff at LAUTECH may be forced to resume their suspended strike action against the backdrop of events in LAUTECH where Oyo and Osun states have demonstrated astonishing lack of commitment to the funding requirements of the institution.
The ASUU Zonal Chairman then urged the federal government to show more than a passing event in probing allegations of “fraud against present and past administration at the University of Ilorin if the Buhari administration is true to its anti-corruption drive”.
“On the recent revelations of monumental fraud and mind bugling nepotistic manipulations going on at the university of Ilorin which vindicate our petitions to the anti-graft agencies, the Federal Government is hereby called upon to show more than a passing interest in probing the activities of the past and present administrations of the university. This is very important given the present government’s avowed zero tolerance for corruption. Unilorin matter provides a litmus test for this government to prove that it is serious with its fight against graft. The world is waiting and watching.”
While emphasizing the need for state governments within the Ibadan zone to live up to their funding responsibilities to their universities,he warned that ASUU members at LAUTECH will not mind to resume their suspended action even in the midst of the ongoing examination.
