Don’t Use Office For Gratification, Newly Elected Akwa Ibom LG Bosses Told

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has sworn-in 31 local government council chairmen with a charge on them not to use their positions as platform for immediate gratification.

Governor who performed the ceremony at the banquet hall, government house, Uyo, also warned them against engaging in conspicuous consumption at the detriment of the people they are representing.

He reminded them of the need to meet the people’s obligations, stressing that by voting them into office the people have reaffirmed their confidence in them expecting that as leaders who would interpret the visions of the administration to the people at the grassroots.

“As Local Government Chairmen, you are the direct voice, the echo-chamber of the peoples’ issues and concerns, please endeavour to listen to them and work to meet their demands to the best of your ability,” he stated.

Governor Emmanuel who likened their positions to that of a Chief Executive of a Corporation advised the Council helmsmen to be proactive, and devise new approach to issues and be transparent in piloting affairs of their respective Councils.

In his words, he said, “You are not on a course for applause but on a journey that is measured on solid delivery of service to the people. Once you are able to achieve that, the people will in turn give you standing ovation for meeting them at the intersection of their needs.”

“You position is akin to that of a chief executive of a corporation, you must lead, you must  apply new ways of solving problems, you must be creative, decisive, forward- looking,  tough without being dismissive or arrogant and above all, you must be transparent. The people will be watching your every move and you must not fail them.”

Assuring the newly sworn-in local government bosses of a synergy to ensure success, Governor Emmanuel added, “My Administration will, as always, stand ready to support you, and working in close partnership, we will continue to inspire our people and rouse them to ‘dakkada’ and claim the faith of their greatness. Akwa Ibom people are great people and we must do all we can to improve their material circumstance. That is your charge- a charge you must keep.”

He described the elected Council Chairmen as partners in the development of the state and assured them of necessary support to enable them deliver on their mandate.

Governor Emmanuel also commended the state Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) for conducting what he described as a credible election which saw to the emergence of the Council Chairmen as well as Councillors in all the 329 wards.

He noted that the feat has been celebrated by Inter Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC), Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and other Independent Observers.

Governor Emmanuel thanked the Transition Chairmen and their members who held forth in the Councils until when the elections were conducted and expressed appreciation to the people of the state for their unwavering commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which he said has brought development to the state.

He congratulated the Council Chairmen and their Deputies on their successful election wishing them a successful tenure of office.

A total of 9 females comprising 2 Chairmen and 7 Vice Chairmen made the list of the inaugurated council officials while others are males who emerged winners in last Saturday local government polls in the state.
