Democracy Not True Access To Good Governance – Fayemi

Democracy does not necessarily generate good governance and peace since it has to be fundamentally anchored to the moorings of justice and cognate indices including the rule of law, a fair and sound electoral process, the Minister of Mineral resources, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has said.

The Minister, who was the Guest Speaker at the 10th year memorial lecture of the former Governor of Ondo State, Chief Adebayo Adefarati stressed the need for equitable system of resource allocation and distribution across the various tiers and levels of government in Nigeria.
According to him, while it can e said that the most
important, if not ultimate, goal of system that are put in
place to organize society—such as democracy—is to attain the objective peace which can mainly be achieved and sustained within a framework that essentially predicated on justice.
The Lecture, which was titled ‘’Justice and Fairness as
Panacea for Peace’’ , he said attributed the notion of
attaining ‘peace’ in society to the achievement  of
a holistic human security agenda particularly in a
democratic situation.
The Minister, who was  represented y his former Chief
of Staff, Chief Bunmi Famosaya said, the idea of justice is
related to other concepts such as the rule of  law,
quality before the law and belief that all individuals are
equal.
Such,  he said, is the cornerstone  of the universal declaration on human rights and the constitutional
corpus of civil liberties.
Commenting on the life of the former Governor of Ondo state, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, the incumbent  Governor,
Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu recalled that it was the
struggle and foresightedness of Chief Adefarati that made
the Federal Government to add Ondo state to he Niger
Delta states.
According to him, the state was the first to establish Ondo State Oil Producing Development Commission, (OSOPADEC), an Agency which takes care of Oil resources accruable to the state.
Chief Adefarati, who was popularly called ‘Baba Peace’
in political circles he said was a great Awoist and a lover
beloved member of Awolowo family.
His words, ‘’Adefarati lived a space of Nigeria before
his own time been the Chief Advocate of Restructuring which everyone is clamouring for till date.
Those present at the occasion were, the Chief Mrs. Tutu
Adefarati, Mrs. Olufunke Agagu, widows of Cchief Adefarati and Dr.  Olusegun Agagu respectively, Dr. Reuben  Fasoranti—leader of Afenifere, Senator Titus Olupitan who was the Chairman of the occasion and most of the kitchen Cabinet members of  Chief Adefarati between 1999 and 2003.
