C’River Police Boss Lauds Govt Anti Corruption Campaigns

Cross River Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa has lauded the anti corruption campaign of the present administration saying that it had yielded huge success during the period under review.

He made the remarks in Calabar while speaking at a one-day workshop on ‘Grassroots Anti Corruption campaign for the informal sector in Cross River organised by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Support Initiative with support from Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Inuwa who spoke through a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tunde Gbolarumi, commended the efforts of the commission in the fight against corrupting n in the country.

He described the results so far recorded by the commission as a huge success which had boasted  the battered image of the nation back on track among the comity of nations.

Inuwa therefore called on critics of the Anti-Corruption campaign to join hands with the present administration to get rid of this cankerworm in our society.

He advised them to learn from the huge successes it had recorded and cooperate with government in order to move the country forward, adding that “we must not expect 100 percent support from people especially when it concerns recovery of looted funds and property of individuals found wanton”.

According to him “in order to prevent corruption in Nigerian roads, the emolument of security personnel should by increased, all motorists must have documentary evidence of their vehicles and failure to show I should attract a jail term if convicted and that motor licensing authorities must ensure that vehicles are properly licensed to avoid loss of revenue to the government”.

The acting head of education unit ICP, Mr. Demola Bakare, in his paper entitled “curbing corruption on Nigerian roads” said “today is an important day for the commission as it is a day that marks the first contact between it and the all important transport sector at the grassroots level in Cross River”

As important sector of the economy, he said, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) need to be educated on the effects of corruption on their operations and on the country in general.

Also speaking, Dr. Angela A Ajimase, Executive Director Who Cares Africa (WOCA), described corruption as ” extortion of any kind undermining the professional ethics and promotion of corrupt practices in any sector of life”.

She commended the efforts of this present administration in trying to curb corruption through the legislation of the Freedom of Information law (FOI), whistle blower policy, establishment of (ICPC) EFCC, and the involvement of Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) among others in the crusade against corruption.

Earlier, the Team Lead of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Support Initiative (ACTSI), Edidiong Sambo, said the  organisation deals on advocay, education and training, Human Rights and Community Development programme.

He said participants were drawn from NGOs, CSOs, FRSC, Police, NURTW/RTEAN, market women as well as members of the public.

Sambo expressed satisfaction on the turn at the workshop and hoped that the out come would go a long way in reshaping the minds of Nigerians to wage total war against corruption.
