The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has announced that it had accepted the decision of the Supreme Court on the sack of three Local Government Council Chairmen in the state, declaring that it will always protect the rule of law and democracy in the country.
The position of the Party, which came after a five hour meeting held yesterday between the State Working Committee members and the State Governor,Hon.Seriake Dickson, stated that though the Supreme court ruling and the swearing-in of the three affected persons will not distrust the ongoing conduct of the party primaries for the 2013 local government election, the aggrieved persons declared chairmen by the court will be sworn-in  to serve out their tenure.
The statement, which was signed by the Chairman of the Party, Col. Sam Inokoba, urged party faithful across the State not to be deterred, but go about their normal duties as well as ensure that credible chairmanship primaries are held,” we have confidence in the judiciary and we are of the firm belief that, rather than dampening the resolve of the party, it will strengthen it to do well at the forthcoming LGA polls in the State.”
Meanwhile, the State Governor had directed the security agencies to vet the names and background of persons who have expressed interest to run for offices in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.
The directive is in line with the administration’s policy of zero tolerance for crime, cultism, violence and all forms of criminality, stressing that they should also find out the background, check and vet the names of all aspirants for elective offices in the various local governments.
According to Dickson,”This is aimed at ensuring that persons who are tainted in anyway are not allowed to fly the party’s flag. It is imperative to note that the new PDP in Bayelsa State going forward has no room for persons with questionable background or character. The party has no preferred candidates and will not condone any attempt by anyone to flout laid down procedures and rules set out by the party for candidates to emerge.”
“Security agencies have further been put on red alert to identify and deal with anyone who is out to foment trouble or bent on disturbing the peace” he said.
However, some stakeholders in the Saturday’s primaries are of the firm belief that the meeting which was held at the Government House on Friday at the instance of Governor Dickson was meant to select candidates instead of an open primaries.
