Niger state governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has emphasized the training and retraining of teachers in the country to enable them acquire skills that will aid teaching.
He said that being trained regularly will expose the teachers to modern trends and help them to meet the challenges in the global competitive market.
Aliyu stated at the opening of the North Central Zone Mandatory Continuing Professional Training organized by the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary School (ANCOPSS).
He harped on the need for teachers to have a council to regulate their activities in the country, faulting the present Teachers Registration Council as it has no power to discipline erring teachers.
The governor added that 50 per cent and 60 per cent of those teaching are not registered teachers while some registered teachers exhibit some actions that are contrary to the profession.
‘We don’t have a council that can discipline teachers we need such a council to make the job more professional’ he declared.
According to him, the proposed Council will have power to discipline teachers and even stop them from practicing if they ran afoul of the law as it is obtainable in other professional organizations.
Aliyu lamented that a lot of people teaching in the country see the job as a last resort pointing out that they do not have the values and emotions required of professional teachers.
He then directed Principals and Teachers in Niger state to meet early next year to review the national education curriculum and ensure that it meet the yearnings and aspirations of the sector in the state.
National President of ANCOPSS, Hajia Fatima Abdulrahaman who was recently elected at the Enugu convention of the Confederation unfolded a five point agenda which her administration will pursue which include institution of award for serving principals, scholarship for students from the 6 geo political zones of the country, promotion of Girl- child education and resolution of intra and inter principals disputes.
