44,000 women and girls die each year from unsafe abortions, and millions more suffer serious, often permanent injuries, globally.
Also, 22 million unsafe abortions occur each year across the world.
In 2016, almost 600,000 women received safe abortion care at Ipas-supported health facilities.
Ipas, a global sexual and reproductive health organization, disclosed this information in its 2016 annual report.
“Tom meet the reproductive health needs of women and girls, we focus on improving health services for them,” Ipas wrote in the report.
It declared that multifaceted approaches that include work in the health, social and legal sectors to support women’s health and rights form its operational framework.
On how to meet the reproductive health demands of women and girls, Ipas said:  “We focus on improving health services for them, increasing their access to services, and expanding their sexual and reproductive rights.”
Disseminating reproductive health information and how to access services is another strategy employed by the organization.
It also encourages people at national, regional and global levels to support the promotion of women’s reproductive health rights.
In November 2015, Ipas Nigeria shared the findings of a national abortion incidence conducted by the Guttmacher Institute which showed that “abortion is common in Nigeria despite restrictive law.”
For example, abortion incident study showed that 1.25 million Nigerian women had an abortion in 2012.
“”The study found that almost all of the abortions were performed clandestinely, mainly by unskilled providers or using unsafe methods or both,” Ipas lamented.
