No fewer than thirty four teams would be featuring in the maiden edition of the Nigeria Open Handball Tournament, billed to serve off on Monday in Kaduna.
Ten female and twenty male teams would be battling for honours at the tournament aimed at restoring the lost glory of handball in the country.
Speaking to New Nigerian Sports on phone, Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) Board member, Ogun Cletus who is the Chairman of the organizing committee explained that the tournament is open for participants of all ages.
He said that though a similar tournament was held last year, it was tagged National reawakening Handball Tournament because before then, there were no activities in handball for a long time. “Before we held the competition last year, handball was going moribund. We felt the game was losing its scale in the country,” he added.
Speaking further, he said the tournament was conceived by a group of concerned veterans, which attracted several ex players, who came together to make it a reality.
The week long tourney is expected to end on November 14, 2015.
